Bouldering

Years ago, LMC’s President and CEO Robyn Carlton was walking through the overgrown trails and boulders at Rockmont Park near St. Elmo. She noticed white dusty streaks and handprints on many of the boulders. Puzzled, she asked a friend from the Access Fund: why is there white chalk on all these boulders?

Folks are climbing here, he said. The chalk helps their grip.

LMC faced a decision: lock up the park or give people access.“So, we uncovered the boulders,” Robyn remembers. “We built landing pads, walls and trails. We began co-mingling with the climbing community.”

In 2017, LMC opened the South’s first public natural urban bouldering park. Rockmont Park, located near Old Wauhatchie Trail, boasts 27 natural boulders spread out across 50 acres of community-accessible, family-friendly land, all built and stewarded by the Howard Leadership Program interns.

We’ve produced a Bouldering Guide for regional climbers.

The boulders are also home to one of the most unique climbing competitions in the region.
